It’s been a while since we’ve spoke, so this life update is here to share what I’ve been up to, how I’ve been feeling and where we go from here.
It’s been a while. I’ve done one of these before, where I ramble about what I’ve been up to and why I’ve taken time away. But before we jump right in, let me re-introduce myself. It’s been a while. And we have some new people in our community (it’s a thrill to have you).
So HELLO THERE! I’m Lou. I’m a journalist, currently working within women’s magazines and feature writing. The last we spoke, I was completing my BA Honours Degree in English, Journalism & Creative Writing at Strathclyde University. And it’s been two years since I walked across the small stage in Barony Hall, to get bopped on the head and clutch my graduation scroll on a sweltering summer’s day.
Since then, I’ve completed my MA degree in Multimedia Journalism at Glasgow Caledonian University and received my NCTJ and BJTC certificates to boot. I’ve also moved back to my hometown when I was offered my grad job in women’s magazines which was, and has been, a complete thrill. Anyone who knows me knows how much I adore magazines.
Working within the industry I’ve admired really is such a gift — no matter how cheesy that sounds.
With so much of my work focused on university work, internships and freelance commissions, writing in my corner of Internet real estate fell by the wayside. I didn’t do a life update. And I’ve missed this space — a corner to call my own, to speak about what I like, no matter how frivolous or serious. I used to struggle with being a writer and not having a specific beat — I liked fashion and beauty, but also social commentary, policy and politics, local news and even tech to a degree. What can I say — the Cambridge Analytica data scandal got me hooked on how data can impact and shape our lives.
Now, I like the fact there is *so* much I want to know about and speak on. I’m a complex, multitalented woman! It’s good to have a beat as a journalist — but it is okay if you haven’t found that yet. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself. I’m a girl that likes to have a few strings to her bow and do multiple different things. Some call it being a workaholic — I say it’s being restless and eager to learn. It’s why I’m a journalist. I’m curious about EVERYTHING.
I’ve also launched an online book club, you can find all about it here and how to join the Facebook group here. I write a weekly newsletter about the world goings-on for those strapped on time or tired with the confusing jargon around our politics, which you can find out more about here. I’m tussling with starting a podcast, but we’ll get to it one day. Maybe. Who knows! Maybe that will be my next life update…
For the regular bio stuff — I’m a 24-year-old Scot completing her first full year in Adult Life and it’s been interesting. A year of:
Living back home with my parents.
Being in a long-term, long-distance relationship.
Realising stuff I want to do with my life, including making a five year plan
Getting matching friendship tattoos with two real-life angels.
Graduating again! My name now has MA at the end of it. Pretty cool. And yes, I started my new job, moved across country whilst finishing my Masters final project. I’m a warrior (it’s what my name means).
Falling back in love with exercise, including running and planning to do the Great Scottish Run but then:
Being a literal worldwide pandemic, with life as we knew it changing, potentially forever.
Yes, it’s still a ~thing~ as the pandemic happens.
More? Elections? Again?
Eating a lot of Kinder chocolate. It’s a habit as much a part of me as writing now.
And this space?
It’s been polished up and changed, because it needed a boost after a few years being left unattended. Like your island on Animal Crossing, if you will. So with a new look, less pressure stuck between my shoulder blades and a small murmur of confidence, I announce this blog OPEN!
What can you expect?
The short answer — a little bit of everything. Personal posts, a monthly musing, book recommendations, skincare chat, politics, social commentary, life lessons and more. I know blogs are meant to have a niche to have them stand out, but I’m not looking to stand out. I’m looking to do my own thing, to allow me thoughts to have a bit of dignity and be written out rather than cluster my brain. I’d like this to be the place you come for a pick-me-up, a life chat or even just for a quick fire round of recs. It’s up to you!
All I know is that I’ve missed typing out my thoughts, getting a bit more real with myself and sharing stuff I love. It’s nice to do that.
Sometimes writing is terrifying — I think that’s a reason why I stopped, because I was so worried what I would face when I was honest with myself. Honesty is uncomfortable. It can be a bit too on the nose. But I’m not scared anymore — I’m weirdly looking forward to tussling with things and knowing yes, I won’t get things right every time.
Also — I have really good taste. Not afraid to say it. You want a book rec? A skincare product? A trend? I can give you it ALL.
Looking to understand some politics? Wondering about pop culture moments? Confused what the timeline is talking about? Baby, I am here for you.
So hello. I’m Lou. I’m looking forward to getting to know you more.
Speak soon, but for now: don’t bleach your hair. Promise it won’t come out like it would in the salon. And there WILL be a life update or two more.
